Cardiac Anesthesia at Uganda Heart Institute encompasses not just the administering of anesthesia for both Cardiac surgery in the operating theatre and interventional cardiology in the Cardiac Catheterization laboratory, but also the management of Critical care patients, Perioperative medicine, pain services and management of emergency cardiovascular services.

The super specialist in Cardiac Anesthesia is an essential part of the emergency cardiovascular management team and provides anesthesia care for patients with cardiac diseases undergoing cardiac surgery with and without extra corporeal circulation. In addition the super specialist in Cardiac Anesthesia conducts preoperative patient evaluation and interpretation of cardiovascular and other relevant diagnostic test data, hemodynamic and respiratory monitoring, advanced level Perioperative Transesophageal Echocardiography (TEE), management of cardiopulmonary bypass (CPB), pharmacological and mechanical hemodynamic support, and perioperative critical care including ventilatory support and perioperative pain management.

Cardiac Anesthesia at UHI is evidenced by participation in continuing medical education as well as by involvement in research as it pertains to the care of cardiac patients.
