Francis’s story underscores the importance of early detection.
Meet Francis Kaggwa, a resident of Bunamwaya in Wakiso District. In January 2022, Francis experienced sudden and severe chest pain. Initially thinking it was related to COVID-19, he tried herbal remedies. However, as the pain intensified, Francis realized the seriousness of hiscondition and sought medical help.
Recognizing the urgency, Francis’s doctor referred him to Rubaga Hospital for a cardio test,where he received a crucial referral to the Uganda Heart Institute (UHI). At UHI, he was impressed by the professionalism and responsiveness of the doctors. Despite the gravity of his situation, they acted promptly, instilling hope and reassurance.
Francis was diagnosed with a blood clot in his heart, which had significantly impaired his left ventricle. Despite his smaller stature and hypertension managed through diet, he trusted the expertise of the medical professionals. After a successful operation, he woke up without any pain and recovered well.
However, three months later, Francis suffered a mini-stroke, a common occurrence for clot patients. He temporarily lost his ability to speak but regained it with the help of the doctors at the Heart Institute. Ongoing challenges with language impairment led him to seek treatment from speech therapists, physiotherapists, and brain specialists. Despite all this Francis continued adhering to this medication and instructions given to him by the specialists. This level of trust resulted in his quick recovery.
To support his recovery, Francis adopted natural dietary mechanisms recommended by his nutritionist, focusing on vegetables, greens, and balanced protein intake. Gentle exercises, like walking, became part of his daily routine.
Francis expresses deep gratitude to the entire team at the Uganda Heart Institute, including Dr. Emmy Okello, Dr. Daniel, Nurse Grace, Monica, and the management team. Their professionalism, expertise, and unwavering support played a vital role in his recovery.
Francis’s story underscores the importance of early detection, prompt medical intervention, and the ongoing support in managing cardiac emergencies and post-stroke challenges. Additionally, it highlights the crucial aspect of having trust in the capability of managing his condition within his own country, at the Uganda Heart Institute.
